Meadow Montessori Preschool Program

Preschool Program (Ages 3 to 5 years)

Children can spend 2 years in the Preschool Classroom and are able to progress at his or her own pace in both social/emotional and academic areas.

The Kindergarten class joins the Preschool group for periods and this age grouping allows younger children to learn from their older classmates, as well as their teachers, while older children develop confidence and self-esteem through helping the younger students. A strong sense of community is evident in the classroom, as well as a respect for others, the classroom, the environment and himself. The Montessori  experience inspires a love of learning and a curiosity about the world that lasts a lifetime.

The Preschool curriculum has 5 core areas of study: language, mathematics, practical life, sensorial, culture & science.

Preschool Curriculum

Practical Life Children love practical life at any age. With older children, their stimulation needs are higher and thus, more challenging. Practical life is a fun part of every classroom day. Taking care of the environment plays a huge role in their practical life activities.

Mathematics When learning Math within the Montessori classroom, the aim is to begin with concrete materials that the child can see and touch and slowly move to a more abstract way of learning. Using these materials the children learn addition, multiplication, subtraction and division. Students learn the “foundation” of Math, instead of rote memorization.

Sensorial Through the use of sensorial equipment the children are able to recognize each individual sense. The material provides the child with a sensory-motor activity that will allow them to stimulate each of the senses. This allows the child to form new concepts through experiences and exercise. As the child progresses the sensorial materials become more challenging.

Language When a child first learns phonetic sounds they begin to recognize the sounds in everything they see and hear. Through this process, they begin to associate the sounds with written words and gradually every word takes on meaning in a sentence and leads the ability to read. With this new skill they begin to enjoy all things associated with language.

Culture (History and Geography) This area of the classroom provides insight for a child to help understand more about their city, their province, their country and so forth. Using puzzle maps the children begin to see where they are in relation to the rest of the world. With the help of flags they begin to learn how countries identify their portion of the world. Looking at how the earth evolved, how people are different and similar and how life changes and yet, remains unchanged, the children develop a global consciousness.

Dance/Creative Movement Meadow Montessori brings in specialized instructors once a week for classes in movement for both the morning and afternoon programs.Music In addition to a weekly music class the classroom embraces music daily.

Art With access to a variety of art materials children can create a masterpiece on their own time.

Library The library is a place for a child to go for information, comfort or personal space. An array of books will sit in the cozy corner for a child to engage in.

Field Trips Children will enjoy several field trips, whether to further explore an important topic in class, or the time of year that brings out an educational journey. Parents will be invited to participate.

The Environment Every minute throughout the school day is an opportunity for education. Within the classroom, the children respect their materials, keep their room clean, recycle, and take responsibility for their actions. Outside the classroom, the same thing occurs. The external environment is kept clean; a lesson can be anywhere a child explores from the clouds to a rock in the garden.
